Engine and Performance
A 1.6L four-cylinder engine in the engine compartment generates 113 pound-feet of torque and 121 horsepower. It’s quick enough for this little ute, especially from a stop to about 70 km/h, but it won’t win any drag races. A pair of winter tires that seemed to enjoy shamefully spinning every time I began from a halt added to the feeling that it’s wonderfully zippy around town. My personal average was a better-than-expected 8.0 L/100 km over a very cold week with short trips and idle to defrost the large front windscreen. It is rated at 8.0 L/100 km in the city and 7.0 on the interstate. As befits the cabin’s abundance of features, the Santa Cruz is equipped with the most up-to-date active safety features, such as automatic high beams, lane-keep assist to warn and guide you back on course, blind-spot monitoring (although this crossover has excellent visibility), and rear cross-traffic alert for reversing out of parking spaces. It’s as amazing that Hyundai offers such options in all except the most basic model. However, it lacks adaptive cruise control, a technology seen in the majority of vehicles in its class. Hyundai provides excellent value with this little crossover. You won’t get a new one for less, and although choosing the lowest price means getting a manual and sacrificing some of the safety gear, well-equipped vehicles like my Trend tester won’t add much to your monthly payment. As cars become more expensive, low-cost options such as the Santa Cruz, which has everything the huge crossovers do but has a smaller, easier-to-manage footprint, appear to be a better alternative. If you want a crossover experience with a higher driving position, an upright stance, and boxy style, the Santa Cruz offers exceptional value and is loaded with large car amenities.
